Summer Nights @ The South Melbourne Night MarketsPosted by: Scott Ko
The South Melbourne Night Market is a welcome addition to Melbourne’s repertoire of trendy night market spots. Having personally survived the ‘Night Noodle Markets’ and its never ending queues, it was a refreshing change to be able to stroll hand-in-hand with Mr A (my significant other *wink*), perusing the hipster stalls and sampling the delicious food on offer without having to weave through a snake-like queue of overeager foodies. Seriously, if you are going to wait 1.5 – 2 hours at the Chin Chin’s stall, you might as well visit the actual restaurant.
During the day, the South Melbourne Markets sell a variety of fresh produce and random knick knacks. The friendly vendors are only too willing to assist, which is particularly helpful for those of us who are a bit challenged by the thought of cooking. In future, I will be blogging on individual vendors and their stories, so watch this space if you’re interested in sustainability and fresh market produce!
Back to the night markets – the South Melbourne Night Markets are on every Thursday night 5:30 pm – 9:30 pm (until December 19th), along Cecil and Coventry Streets. Rainy weather, no worries. We visited the Night Markets on a pouring day which is fortunately sheltered by a large verandah decked out in multi-coloured fairy bulbs. In terms of food options, there are a range of stalls, food trucks and restaurants.
