Gluten Free Providore @ Prahran Market

We all have that unfortunate friend limited by certain dietary requirements. Managing a gluten-free (GF) diet can be difficult with effort spent examining labels, searching far and wide for GF friendly restaurant and unfortunate cases of FOMO observing others eat. In the trendy world of health fanatics, a gluten free diet is no longer exclusive to the dietary impaired, with an increasing number of people voluntarily opting to join. You know its a significant trend when the supermarket duopoly: Coles & Woolworths have expanded their GF options with the introduction of the ‘Simply Gluten Free’ and ‘Free From’ range.

What is gluten?

Gluten is a protein found in wheat, rye, barley, triticale and possibly oats. It is also present in foods made from these, for example, malt. A GF diet avoids all food that contain gluten (AIS). Common foods that must be avoided include bread, pasta, beer, cookies, cakes, pastries, cereal, crackers.

Who needs a GF diet?

  • Coeliac Disease sufferers
  • Wheat allergy sufferers

Several studies also show a link between autoimmune thyroid diseases (Hashimoto’s, Grave’s) with gluten intolerance. Such is the strength of the link, that sufferers of these diseases are recommended to be screened for gluten intolerance. Studies have also demonstrated that carriers of the HLA DQ gene are genetically predisposed to gluten intolerance – a gene that is found in 80% of the American population (dominant & recessive). Considering these facts, it is suggested that many individuals are unaware of their gluten intolerance, with the emergence of numerous newly diagnosed cases. With these statistics, the market opportunity for GF products is growing.

Where can I buy gluten free?

Although they are improving, supermarkets have a limited range – particularly in the area of instant meals. Online vendors are a better option, but for individuals that like to touch and view their foods in person, specialty markets are a superior option.

The Gluten Free Providore at Prahran markets is one such option. The GF providore is part of a chain of retail stores under Darriwill Farm that celebrates traditional country produce. I shared a chat with Gabby – one of the store assistants who comes from a family of dieticians. She walked me around the store talking me through their products. I admit I was instantly drawn to the GF macarons by Cacao. I tasted a salted caramel macaron and it was surprisingly good.
